TEAM LEADER

Ricardo Zunino, he replaced Niki Lauda at Brabham

1979 - The penultimate Grand Prix of the year was at Montreal again, and it was Alan Jones who won the race after another battle with Gilles Villeneuve, who was determined to repeat his 1978 win here, and they finished less than a second apart.

The big news, however, was Niki Lauda's departure from Brabham during first practice. Despite a new car and a good deal for 1980 he remarked, "My heart is not in it any more".

So Nelson Piquet became the team leader and he had the latest and much better Cosworth-powered Brabham BT49 to play with. He qualified the BT49/02 fourth fasted and spent most of the race in third place until a gearbox failure stopped him on lap 61.
