STOCK CAR

1975 - CONFUSION REIGNED supreme at the 100-Miles U.S. Auto Club Stock Car race at the Illinois State Fair.

By the time the events of the day had ended, there was little doubt that more than 8.000 fans had witnessed mayhem in its finest hour.

It was one of those rare major league Stock Car which saw everybody get screwed. The 1975 appearance of the U.S. Auto Club Stock Car division at the Illinois State Fair was comparable to the curtain not raising on a Broadway play. Or having a light failure ay a night baseball game. Or having the starting gate fail to open for a horse race.

Needless to say, USAC wasn't confused when the race started. Why ? Because all the timing and scoring equipment was working perfectly. It was later when everybody got confused.. Why ? Because the timing equipment began malfunctioning sometime shortly after the 50 th lap.

Shortly after 50th lap, the caution light appeared after a mishap involving cars driven by Jim Bowsher and Harold Fair. That's when scorers and USAC officials began to detect that something was wrong.

One USAC official said some scorers clocks began showing car making laps in 22 seconds (the track record is 37.21 seconds). Meanwhile, drivers began ducking their behemoth stockers into the pits for a  final gulp of fuel.

USAC official began looking for a race leader ...USAC has also had difficulty picking up the right leader with the pace car during caution light periods...

The Springfield confusion was one more incident that helped to make 1975 a year of controversy for the USAC Stock Car Division.
