Em 1969, o King Crimson lançou In The Court Of The Crimson King, considerado por muitos como um dos melhores álbuns de estréia já feitos. Para comemorar o 50 º aniversário deste disco clássico, a banda relançou no final de 2019, um box especial com um conjunto de quatro discos, que inclui 3 CDs e um Blu-ray.
O disco foi lançado em 10 de outubro de 1969, e foi gravado no Wessex Sound Studios, Londres, entre julho-agosto de 1969.
Este é o único álbum com a formação original da banda. Quase imediatamente depois que In The Court of the Crimson King foi lançado, os membros fundadores Ian McDonald e Michael Giles deixaram a banda. Greg Lake os seguiu alguns meses depois, deixando apenas Peter Sinfield e Robert Fripp na banda. Sinfield só ficaria na formação até o começo de janeiro de 1972.

Em 5 de julho, eles abriram o show para os Stones no Hyde Park. Os Stones organizaram um concerto gratuito no qual apresentariam o novo guitarrista da banda, Mick Taylor.
O King Crimson subiu ao palco do Hyde Park e enfrentou uma audiência estimada em 650.000 pessoas - uma experiência angustiante para qualquer um, como o baixista / vocalista Greg Lake se recorda:
“Eu nunca tinha visto tantas pessoas na minha vida - por qualquer motivo . Quero dizer, você precisaria de uma guerra para ver tantas pessoas! Eles não estavam lá para me ver ou o King Crimson, estavam lá para ver os Rolling Stones, então, de certa forma, não foi tão ruim assim.
