The Humble Pie Collection
When diminutive in stature but huge in talent belter Steve Marriott parted company with psychedelic folkies the SMALL FACES in the late sixties (the others became simply the FACES by adding Rod Stewart and Ronnie Wood), he formed the harder edged HUMBLE PIE with ex-HERD axeman Peter Frampton.
After the departure of Mick Taylor in 1975 from the Rolling Stones, Marriott was considered as his replacement; however, Mick Jagger allegedly blocked the move after Marriott upstaged him during the audition. According to Ronnie Wood, Marriott was Richards' first choice to replace Mick Taylor. Keith Richards listed Marriott as one of his five favourite artists of all time.
Steve Marriott died on 20 April 1991 when a fire, thought to have been caused by a cigarette, swept through his home in Arkesden, Essex. The cause of the fire appeared to be a cigarette end or possibly a candle, which Marriott used to read by in bed. A verdict of accidental death was recorded. A post-mortem examination found the cause of death to be carbon monoxide poisoning due to smoke inhalation. Dr Weir said that the effects of the valium and alcohol would have put Mr Marriott into a deep sleep
