(Berlin, Germany 5 November 1940 – 28 October 2026)
Elke Sommer (1940-2026) was a prolific German-born actress, singer, and artist who became a major international sex symbol and Hollywood star in the 1960s... While on a 1958 vacation in Italy with her mother, she won a beauty contest and caught the eye of the Italian film industry. Director Vittorio De Sica and other filmmakers noticed her, leading to her stage name "Sommer" and early roles in European comedies and dramas. She starred alongside Paul Newman in The Prize (1963)—winning a Golden Globe for Most Prominent Newcomer—and played Maria Gambrelli in the Pink Panther comedy A Shot in the Dark (1964) with Peter Sellers. Throughout the decade, she shared the screen with Hollywood heavyweights including James Garner, Dick Van Dyke, Bob Hope, and Dean Martin. Sommer considered painting a deeper passion than acting. Influenced by Marc Chagall, she held roughly 40 solo art exhibitions throughout the U.S. and Europe. 📷 : Elke Sommer posing in front of her classic golden-tan Porsche 912 with personalized "BRUTE" license plates in the late 1960s.
