HOCKENHEIM BAD LUCK

1983 - Only three laps from the end in Hockenheim, Nelson Piquet is lying a safe second, the same position as in the previous year's race when Eliseo Salazar robbed the BMW engined car of its first home win.

And the impossible happens yet again: as the Brabham bursts into the motodrome, the massed spectators see that the tail end is on fire.

Piquet tries to bring the car to a halt next to a marshal equipped with a fire extinguisher. He overshoots however: "The rear brakes had gone completely!"

This time it was a broken fuel filter. Piquet stands alone beside the crash barrier, eaten up with entirely justified frustration.

But back with the the time in the paddock, he recalls a new joke he wanted to tell then and the sad moment is overcome.
